I am a public school teacher working in the inner city. In this era of ever increasing school and teacher accountability there is one group that is strikingly absent from the equation - parents. As you stated, they are their child's first teacher. If they fail to provide a home environment that supports the education process then the hands of public schools are essentially tied. On a daily basis I witness the impact a chaotic, non-supportive home life has on the education of a child. Teachers do not have the ability to wave a magic wand and make everything better. It takes a concerted effort from all parties involved.
