CDC: Nearly 1 in 4 babies born to unwed cohabitors

ATLANTA (AP) — Health officials say nearly 1 in 4 babies are born to unmarried couples who are living together, a significant jump from a decade ago.

The government previously said more than 40 percent of births are to unwed mothers. But a report released Thursday offers new detail showing most unwed births occur in cohabiting couples.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study was based on face-to-face interviews with more than 22,000 men and women during 2006 through 2010.

About 23 percent of the reported births were to unmarried heterosexual couples who were living together when the child was born. That was up from 14 percent when a similar study was done in 2002. The CDC did not speculate on reasons for the increase.

THis is a big problem with blacks and it needs to stop. Without dad kids have a very hard time which can lead to sons joining gangs and girls sleeping around to find the love of daddy. We need to go back to marriage and love not sex and no love. I think we need to go back to where teens get married at age 15. A least God blesses the union and a baby that could come has a father and a last name and a real father.

Interesting how the article didn’t mention race or color or ethnicity but the above posters decided to conclude based on their own preconceived true “inner” feelings and stylized statistics that this is a “black issue.” There are an enormous amount of white, black, hispanic single parents…but this article is talking about babies born to unwed COHABITATING couples…that means couples who are living together…the article says that in fact, more couples are a family and just not married. It states that there has beeen a laarge increase in more people staying together as a family. So poster #1,you can definitely take the “maybe” out of maybe you are a bigot…and perhaps both you and Linda can read a little better…remember, reading is fundamental, even for bigots and racists who simultaneously use God in their statements. It’s going to be extremely hot where you both wind up…hopefully you’re not passing this on to any of your children, if indeed God allowed you to procreate…oh, that means have more babies.

There is no need for name calling.Let me take you back a bit this is nothing new, back in slavery days the masters were the first perpetuators of this “epidemic”.they were the ones fathering babies with our great-grand,and grandmothers for years, with no support,or love, and what color were they? What back then our children did not need their fathers as much, or at all for that matter?Look at the T.V.show who do you see Pregnant at Sixteen?I guess it’s ok for them because they are on t.v.and making money from it,Oh, and by the way what color are they? If it was African Americans that show would not exist, but they glorify them, and persecute my people. You have caucasion celebrities shacking, and making babies out of wed lock, but once again it’s ok because they are what “CELEBERTIES”.It’s this type of unfairness, and ignorance that will continue to divide us as a whole.

so true hueynewton in general they are referring to cohabitating couples and that reaches outside just one race. honesty for us i feel we need to emphasis the importance on marriage and having a relationship with god because it goes hand in hand and possibly will result in less cohabiting couples its only a suggestion
