Recently, Fanm Ayisyen Nan Miyami, Inc. FANM (Haitian Women of Miami) celebrated its 20th year anniversary. The group will be recognizing Marleine Bastien the founder, former president, and current Executive Director of FANM. Still Standing: A tribute to Marleine Bastien will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday December 1, 2011 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, 3385 N.E. 188th Street, Aventura, Florida. The event is expected to feature the music of Empress Addi and the Rara Rock band, followed by the 20th anniversary commemorative program of special speakers, a performance by the sensational Vedette Bernard, and the Marleine Bastien Tribute. We are very proud of how much we have accomplished over the years, said FANM Board Chairwoman Marie Paule Woodson. This milestone affords us the opportunity to celebrate our achievements. More importantly, the commemorative program will recognize the co- founders of FANM for their contributions and dedication and will give special accolades to our founder and executive director Marleine Bastien. The group has provided services not only to Haitian women and their families, but to the community at large. Bastien also serves in other capacities in the Haitian-American community in Miami. She is also the Vice Chair of the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition and past Chair of the Florida Immigrant Coalition. I am honored and much humbled that the FANM board and the community has chosen our 20th year for public recognition of our efforts on behalf of FANM and the community that I love, Bastien said. I have worked passionately for equal treatment and justice for the Haitian people and all people with help from a great team: FANM staff, volunteers and supporters. I accept this tribute as validation of FANMs work and the work of those fighting for social justice and peace in the U.S. and around the world.
