Recently the Miami Central Senior High alumni association held an awards ceremony to congratulate the schools football team on winning the schools first state championship. For the first time in the schools 51-year-old history, Miami Central was able to clinch the state championship. The alumni association along with other people in the communityhelped to raise in excess of $30,000 to supply championship rings and jackets for the football team, said William DC Clark, president ofCentrals alumni association. The award ceremony was a culmination of all of that. Clark said the ceremony was important to keep up school moral. We wanted the young men and the parents and the rest of the community to experience an event that they havent experienced at this school since they have been here, he said. We asked everyone to come clean with ties and suits. Darryl Holseandeolph, who is also an alumni of Miami Central, was the brainchild behind the idea of having a ceremony for the state champs. "We felt it was a great year," he said. "The school moved up to a C grade and we won the state championship so we wanted to end on a good note." Holseandeolph also added that football was not the only sport recognized at the ceremony. "We expanded the awards from just a football celebration to include all sports." Back in January, Miami Central upset Dr. Phillips Senior High School 42-27 in the Class 6A final game played in Orlando. By Randy Gricergrice@miamitimesonline.com
