Marie Santime now heads for Turner Tech

Its summer time and a lot of students are thinking about relaxing and hitting up the beach. But, for incoming freshman Marie Saintime, her months off havent just been for vacation shes been hard at work. Saintime, 15, is bound for William H. Turner Technical Arts High School later this month. But for now, she prepared to say goodbye to folks at The Miami Times where she worked this summer as an intern. Saintime was selected by the Florida Christian Association of America [FCAA]. I want to attend Georgia Tech to study criminalistic forensic science, Saintime said. But, I want my second major to be in communications and my sponsor felt that interning at The Miami Times was a good way to improve my ability to communicate and interact with people. I wasnt much of a people person. Saintimes personality skills were put to the test as were her mathematical abilities. I worked in accounting even though Im not the best when it comes to numbers, she said with a smile. But I learned. Math is not my strongest subject. Internship reveals a lot about self Even though she may not be efficient in math, Saintime loves to learn. She likes to write poetry, short stories and also enjoys reading. Shes an athletic girl and had participated on both the wrestling and basketball teams. Dancing in all different kinds of genres also occupies her time. I kind of wanted to chill out with my friends and go to Naples with my family this summer, Saintime said. But The Miami Times helped me more than being out with my friends would have. I learned more about technology. Even though Saintime has her sights set on the science field, she says she values the experience she gained this summer. Even if youre not going to major in the field thats offering internships, you should still take it, Saintime advised. I learned many things at The Miami Times, plus there are different departments that dont just deal with writing if writing isnt your thing. Theres accounting where you deal with numbers, or being at the front desk where you get to interact with people. Saintime believes that being at The Miami Times was time well spent. She even met a couple of people there who she has grown to admire. By Janiah AdamsMiami Times intern
