It hasnt been easy for Karen Franklin but her efforts were recently rewarded as the veteran employee of The Miami Times was presented with her degree from Barry University last Saturday. Franklin, the mother of two and grandmother of two small children, has been with The Miami Times for 30 years. For many readers, she has been the very first face theyve seen when entering the building. Now she can sit back and enjoy the moment and her achievement. Franklin was enrolled in Barry Universitys School of Adult Continuing Education[ACE] program and received a Bachelor of Science with a major in administration and a specialization in human resources. I attended Miami Dade College for two years many years ago and planned to become a legal secretary but then decided that it wasnt what I wanted to do with my life, she said. Then I went to The Miami Times because I was so intrigued with what they did every week and how they focused on news that mattered to the Black community. Since joining the staff, I have had a lot of different assignments sometimes hiring and training new employees sometimes working directly for the publisher, Rachel Reeves. Right now Im the operations manager. Franklin says the program at Barry worked best for her because they understood that we are adults with families so the hours were convenient. Our teachers worked in the same fields in which they taught so that made the classes a lot more interesting, she added. We were able to hear about actual situations and then apply the concepts from our classroom to finding answers to real life problems and issues. Im joyful and Im relieved because going to class after a long day of work hasnt always been easy. And while it was a challenge, the knowledge Ive gained and the experience I had are both something that I would never trade. Congratulations Karen! By D. Kevin McNeirkmcneir@miamitimesonline.com
