The Miami Times gets set for political forum
7/19/2012, 5:30 a.m.
Candidates from hottest races to be on hand Final preparations are being made by The Miami Times for our first ever political forum, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, July 26 and 27. The two-night event kicks off each evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic St. Agnes Episcopal Church, 1750 NW 3rd Avenue in Overtown. With several hundred races up for grabs, it would be impossible to feature every candidate. But based on the interests and responses of our readers, some of the selected candidates that will take to the podium include: Carlos Gimenez and Joe Martinez [county mayor]; Katherine Fernandez Rundle and Rod Vereen [state attorney]; and candidates for county commission District 1, 3 and 9: Barbara Jordan and Shirley Gibson; Alison Austin, Audrey Edmonson and Keon Hardemon; and Dennis C. Moss, respectively. A meet and greet reception will be held each night beginning at 8:30 p.m. Every candidate on the ballot for the August 14th primary is invited to attend and participate in the meet and greet for either or both evenings, even if they are not a featured speaker. They will also be introduced to the audience at the beginning of the program on both nights. Readers who wish to get more involved may submit any questions they might have to the editor at email@example.com. The political forum will be moderated by The Miami Times senior editor, D. Kevin McNeir, on Thursday night. MSNBC correspondent and managing editor for The Grio, Joy-Ann Reid, will join McNeir as co-moderator on Friday. The public is invited to this historic event. By D.
