Wins 30th annual gridiron Battle of Lucy Street The South Dade Buccaneers toppled the Homestead Broncos 10-0 in the 30th annual Battle of Lucy Street last Friday night at Harris Field in what was the Broncos final game of the season. The Broncos (6-4) were coming off of a tiebreaker loss against Northwestern and Carol City a win that would have put them in the post season and had strong hopes to repeat last years 20-10 defeat of their neighborhood rivals on the Citys 100th-year anniversary. But the Buccaneers (9-1) used the historical game to propel them forward after coming off of a bi-week that created momentum as they gear up for their first playoff appearance since 2010, when they lost to Central in the 6A Regional finals. Buccaneers head coach, Nathaniel Hudson, Jr., whose team earned the district 16-8A championship in this his first year as head coach, used the game as a stepping stone for their playoff berth. This will catapult us going into the playoffs, Hudson said. Homestead is a tough team, but well have to step it up in the playoffs. The Bucs may have to step up more than expected after their leading rusher, Leroy Wilson, left the game and did not return due to a leg injury. The team is awaiting MRI results to determine his playoff possibilities. However, even without Wilson, the Bucs managed to come out on top, after a slow first half start where both teams were scoreless and had only combined for 97 rushing yards. The first score of the game came late in the third on a 32-yard field goal by freshman Kicker Julian Garcia. Homestead could not get their offense going, earning only 140 total offensive yards with sophomore Quarterback Maurice Alexander throwing three interceptions and being sacked three times. The Bucs did not fare much better stat-wise only earning 147 total offensive yards but were able to capitalize on a few more opportunities. Their victory was solidified on a 45-yard punt return by junior receiver, Devontay Keaton. South Dade will face Felix Varela in the 8A regional quarterfinals on Friday at Harris Field at 7:30 p.m. By Akilah Lasterakilahlaster3@aol.com
