The late Tanya Martin Pekel left a wonderful legacy that should be recognized in the community. The daughter of Montez Martin and
Marcia Martin Saunders, Tanya and her sister Terrie attended Morningside and Miami Shores Elementary. She was recognized last year at Miami Shores Elementary.
Claudia Slater and the Rhoer Club of Gamma Delta Sigma Chapter, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. held a retreat at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Boca Raton, Fl., July 12-14. Seven young ladies who are members of the Rhoers attended. They were: Baures Monica, Jean Pierre, Ayanna Ortiz, Amer Williams, Timya Taylor, Brenda Role, Auset Nkem, and Tia Mellerson. Along with Slater, sorority members included; Pamlett McPhee, Kyrah Williams, LaTrese Williams, Rhoer Advisor, Anetta Brantly, Laurice Harris and Linda Tart. The theme of the retreat, which featured workshops and seminars, was “Making a Better Me.” Sponsors included: Marlene Chin, Mary Kay; ISD Suzanne Montalbano, Nikia Bauer, Superfly; Jeffrey McKinnon of Hot Cookies; Honey Baked Ham; and Embassy Suites.
Congratulations go out to Taimyr Brittney Strachan who recently received her master’s degree from Valdosta University. On hand to witness her graduation were her mother, Tangela Reed Strachan, grandmother, Caroline Reed, grandfather Dr. Richard J. Strachan, aunts, Generva Lowe; uncle Otis Brown, and cousins Michelle McPhee, Debbie Wedderburn, Lori M. Strachan, Charles Cooper and Kenya Capeheart. Taimyr has entered the doctoral program at Iowa State University.
