Its not your mothers Great American Songbook. Connie James sings songs from George Gershwin and Cole Porter to James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan and more. Its the Great American Songbook and then some. Connie James is slated to perform May 24-26 p.m. at the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center. All performances will take place in the intimate Black Box Theater with food and drinks available for purchase. Connie James has been nominated for a Pixie Award for Best Song/Soundtrack in a Motion Picture for the song Three Words. A classically trained singer with a degree in music from the University of South Carolina, James decided to add acting to her repertoire of talents several years ago, landing roles on NBCs Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Homicide: Life on the Street. James voice can be heard as the announcer in commercials for Partnership for a Drug Free America and for Dennys Skillets for Breakfast. Connie is appearing fresh off a successful run in Sweet Baby James: A Tribute to James Taylor and Blue: A Tribute to Joni Mitchell. In addition to opening for Bob Newhart during Newharts Florida tour, Connie is also starring in the upcoming production of Fever The Peggy Lee Songbook. She has been described by critics as a "songstress extraordinaire, reminiscent of the great American jazz divas." Miami Times staff report
