Stopped in playoff semifinals Sports is a big way of getting young people involved in positive activities, even at the middle school level. Perhaps thats why there was such a buzz recently when the boys basketball team at Highland Oaks Middle School completed the regular season undefeated at 9-0. According to Head Coach Donovan Carter, 29, this years team was extremely talented and worked hard to make it through the season without a loss. We started the season in March and were playing two games a week, he said. As the season continued we really started to jell and felt pretty good about our chances of winning the championship. The Panthers had to beat Carol City in order to clinch a bye going into the playoffs. Next up was Hialeah Miami Gardens whom they defeated. But the shots failed to fall in their favor in their semi-final loss to Miami Coral Springs. Yes the boys were disappointed but they made a great run this year and were very proud of them, Carter added. Carter has been with the team for three years and is a former Navy medic with a background in sports medicine. He was assisted this year by Assistant Coach Daniella Desilva. What about next year? Well Carters not sure if hell be back at the helm or not. He hopes to move up to high school coaching and is being courted by several local teams for a junior varsity coaching position. But the Panthers will be back next year hopefully with a championship trophy. By D. Kevin McNeirkmcneir@miamitimesonline.com
