High school student recognized for work with abused children

Miami Times staff report | 11/7/2013, 9 a.m.

School for Advanced Studies [SAS] Senior Christy Charnel was honored earlier this month by M-DCPS School Board Member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall at a recent Board meeting for her continued commitment to the County’s youth. Christy was recognized in conjunction with Domestic Violence Month for the hundreds of volunteer hours she has done with abused children at His House and for the way she has promoted non-violence in our community. Christy founded the Loving Bonds Foundation at her church in an effort to bring children of all socioeconomic backgrounds together to foster healing through exposure to music, counseling, mentorship and love. Despite her youth, Christy has demonstrated an unusual level of maturity and responsibility at SAS where she will earn an associate in arts degree from Miami Dade College before she even graduates from high school. Universities including Johns Hopkins and Mt. Holyoke have invited her to come up for an all expense paid trip to visit their schools next month. She plans to major in pre-med and theology after she graduates from SAS in June 2014.
