Miami-Dade County was well represented during homecoming at Albany State University in Albany, Ga., during the weekend of Oct. 17-20. Alumni, family and friends enjoyed themselves as they gathered and participated in four days of well planned activities. Many attendees enjoyed the evening All-Black Attire Affair. The Golden Rams football team made their supporters and fans proud with a victory of 42-20 over the Morehouse College.

John Hazelton, alumnus and his teammate Lawrence Hunt were first place winners in the golf tournament held at River Pointe Gold Club. Among South Floridians enjoying the festivities were W. Doris Neal, Carolyn Hazelton, Judy Brown, James and Ernestine Colzie, Linda S. Tartt, Ransom and Helen Hill, Garry Neal, Dr. George and Geraldine Koonce, Lawrence and Josephine Hunt. Go Rams!

Henry Williams, treasurer, Arcola Lakes Park Singing Angels celebrated his 18th birthday at Hadley Park sponsored by Ruby and Eric Williams. Each year he becomes the nemesis of The Duke of Earl, Tom Griffin, Ike and Tina Turner and Super Fly by entertaining the guests with recorded music as he wears a costume for each idol. He thanked those that assisted, such as Slim Jackson, Audrey Williams, Tillie Stibbins, Lynetta Clark, Zerlene Hughes, Felicia Walker, Mary Lue and Robin Banyard.

We recently lost a local icon, Robert “Bobbie” Stringer. He was born on March 6, 1947 to Perry and the late Lizzie Pearl Bembray in Miami. He was also a graduate of Carver High School, where he sang in the choir and joined Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Freeman. Rev. Richard P. Dunn joined other ministers on the dais to deliver words of comfort at his funeral.

Stringer’s singles were “Before You,” “Funky Broadway,” “The Sarge,” “My Sweet Thing” and with Roy C. Hammond “You Turn My World Around.” He visited New York, Copa Grand, Mexico, Spain and the Bahamas. He leaves to mourn his wife, Bernice. Daughters: Sheila, Veronica, Monica, Donna, Talia and Jessica. Sons: Marvin, Corey, Rashard, Robert, Tavares. Robert, Jr., Leronce Variety, Godson.

Some of the musicians in attendance included George Lane, Sherman Hunter, P.J., Rosco White, Willie Johnson, Lunch Say, Timmy Thomas, Lemar Johnson, Jimmy Harrell, Willie Granger, Joey Gilmore, Jol K.C, Sam Early, Dr. Malcolm Black, and Dr. Richard J. Strachan.
