Congratulations to Alice Day founder of the Sunshine Jazz Club, for presenting the fifth annual Hall of Fame inductees, along with Keith Valles, president, and “The Real” Tracy Fields, WLRN FM 91.3 (Mon – Fri. at 7 p.m.). Valles had the honor of presenting inductees: Pete Minger, trumpet/flugelhorn, Nestor Torres, flute, Jimmy Crawford, piano/vocals, Panama Francis, drums, Dave Nuby, (Francis started out playing the saxophone until the drummer failed to show and he kicked off with drums in 1968, ) and Paquito D’Rivera, Alto Saxophone.
Others recognized were China Valles, former president, Jesse Jones, Jr., Alice Day, Melton Mustafa, Blue Mitchell, Billy Rolle, Bill Peeples, Ira Sullivan, Eric Knight, Charles Austin, Mel Dancy, Jet Nero, Myrtle Jones, Joe Danata, Sam Jones, Dolph Castellana, Howie Schneider Trio with Sam Chiodo, bass, and impresario James Cotmon, drums.
Sponsors were Judy S. Carter, Brenda Wilson, Dave Nuby Jr, Xavier “Showtime”, Smith, Pamela Gains, Valarie and Larry Stafford, Larry and Caroline Adams, Dwight and Cassandra Dickerson from New York City.

It was a historical day, Wednesday, July 30 when the officials of Dade County Parks and Recreation (Jack Kardys) held a ground breaking for the new senior center at Arcola Lakes Park. With the assistance of Melonie Burke in passing out shovels to the Singing Angels: Treniece Henderson, park manager, Mary Simmons, director, Constance Ekon, president, and senior citizens totaling over 200.
The Singing Angels marched in singing “Climbing Jacobs Ladder” and continued with the “Hallelujah Chorus,” “Every Praise”,“Total Praise”, and leaving the audience standing to “Enjoy Jesus.” Some of the members included Carolyn Frazier, Tillie Tibbins, Elizabeth James, Ramona Varner, Virgina Smilley, Gloria Pacely, Lonnie McCartney, Nettie Murphy, June Miller, Joe and Shelia Mack, Mae Etta Lowery, Veronica Johnson, Daphne Johnson, Mamie Williams, Willie Jackson, Henry Williams, Sadie Williams, Ruby Allen, and Daisy Emmers.
The center will be a state of the art recreational building with modern facilities for senior citizens to enjoy. Congratulations go out to Commissioner Jean Monestime, the builders and general bond establishment for the 19-acres and $6.millions.
Kudos go out to Sam Bawa of Market Food for having one of the cleanest convenience stores in the Arcola Lakes community.
On his staff is Larry Bess, cousin of former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Devon Bess. Ray, L.A. and several more that help keep the store open 24-hours a day.
One of the best customers is Gwen Rogers, who was given a plaque for her dedicated services at Miami Central High. Sam vows to start a little league football team and select Leander “Trixie” Phillips as a coach.
