Advanced weight-loss procedures

Miami Times staff report | 1/16/2014, 9 a.m.

A variety of minimally invasive, advanced surgical weight-loss procedures are available today. After a medical evaluation, the surgeon will discuss which of the following surgical options may work for you, based on your health, needs and weight-loss goals.

Gastric Band

Jackson also offers gastric band weight-loss surgery. The band, which reduces the functional capacity of the stomach, can be inflated or deflated at any time after the operation and requires periodic adjustments. Specifics

• Adjustable and reversible

• Outpatient and overnight hospital stay

• Implanted device

• No rerouting of the intestines

• Average excess weight loss: 30-40 percent

Gastric Sleeve

The surgeons at Jackson’s Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence specialize in this relatively new procedure. In fact, the physician teams at Jackson South and Jackson North have led international studies in the use of gastric sleeve or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. With this procedure, the size of the stomach is reduced and reshaped into a tube or “sleeve.”

Specifics

• Overnight stay

• No need for adjustments

• No implanted device

• No rerouting of the intestines

• Average excess weight loss: 70 percent

Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery has often been considered the standard to which other gastric bypass surgeries are compared.

A “y-shaped” section of the small intestine is attached directly to a small food pouch at the upper end of the stomach.

Specifics

• 2-3 day hospital stay

• Rerouting of the intestines

• No need for adjustments

• No implanted device

• Average excess weight loss: 75-80 percent

Revisional Surgery

As with any surgery, sometimes a revisional procedure may be required. Revisional procedures offer a solution to bariatric patients who have failed to lose the desired weight or regained weight. Generally, revisional surgery is successful in achieving controlled and safe weight loss.
