The Miguel B. Fernandez Foundation has donated $1 million to the Mourning Family Foundation.

This donation will be used to support the Overtown Youth Center (OYC) and its programs, Tracy Mourning’s mentoring program for girls, Honey Shine and the OYC endowment. The Mourning Family Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Alonzo and Tracy Mourning, provides a multitude of opportunities to enhance the lives of children and families in the South Florida community through advocacy, education and enrichment services.

“Over the last 10 years, the Mourning Family Foundation has served over 5,000 youths from in and around the Miami Dade County area. On a daily basis, over 600 students are provided holistic learning to ensure that 100 percent of youth in our local community become positive contributing citizens, said Alonzo Mourning. “Since 2007, over 90 percent of high school seniors have successfully graduated from high school and approximately 80 percent of all graduates have enrolled in colleges and universities. Without contributions from gentlemen like Mike Fernandez and family, none of this happens. On behalf of everyone at the Mourning Family Foundation and its associated nonprofits and programs, we are thankful for Mr. Fernandez’s Family contribution,” Mourning added.

Mike Fernandez and his family live the precious values of life each and every day.  From their humble beginnings, they have always found a way to give back to the country, state and community that offered them an opportunity to try.  Since arriving in South Florida after serving in the U.S. Army, Mike has grown multiple enterprises and has created job opportunities for over 20,000 families.  Among his many current business ventures, Mike founded Simply Healthcare Plans which in partnership with Earvin “Magic” Johnson provides services to HIV/AIDS patients throughout Florida.  Mike, his wife Constance and their five children live in South Florida.

“People are surprised to hear I am not a big sports enthusiast, I am, however, a huge fan of the Mourning Family Foundation and Alonzo Mourning’s work off the court, said Mike Fernandez. “I met with Mr. Mourning, he shared the aim of the Foundation and he spoke to me about kids that have gone to college. Mr. Mourning and I share a passion for helping children in Miami, our family is proud to be able to help,” Fernandez added.
