Florida Memorial University 2014 commencement

Florida Memorial University, the historically Black college in Miami Gardens held its annual commencement ceremony, filled with pomp and pageantry for 129 graduates at Clock Tower Promnenade on the school’s campus Saturday. The service included traditional procession of faculty members along the promenade accompanied by a stream of drummers. An array of international flags that represented the graduates native country lined the promenande.

Prior to the commencement ceremony, a baccalaureate service was held at the Susie C. Holley Religious

Center. Dr. Joseph D. Turner of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Miami was was the speaker.

Miami-Dade School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho was the speaker for the main commencement ceremony.

Carvalho, along with Dr. Robert B. Hayling, will be presented with Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during the ceremony. Hayling graduated from Florida A&M College in 1951 with a BS degree in Biology. He is a former Lieutenant with the United States Air Force, and the first Black dentist in Florida to be elected to the local, regional, state, and national components of the American Dental Association.

The commence will be the first for Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis as the university’s 13th president.
