Atlanta draws music lovers for jazz festival

Miami Times staff report | 5/22/2014, 9 a.m.

Blacks in South Florida are heading out Memorial Day Weekend during the busiest travel period of the year to experience the spectacular ending of Atlanta’s Jazz Festival.

"This year’s Atlanta Jazz Festival is going to be one of our best,” said Camille Russell Love, Director of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “We will present a diverse lineup of artists from around the world, and because we are blessed with a wealth of talent here in Atlanta, we’ve added a third stage in Piedmont Park just for local artists.”

The other big change is that the grand finale in Piedmont Park will end on Sunday instead of Monday,

Memorial Day as it has in the past. "Grilling will not be allowed in the park this year and the park will reopen for normal public use on Monday, May 26," Russell Love said.

Headlining in the park will be two masters of the jazz piano, Ahmad Jamal and Atlanta-based Freddie Cole. And on Friday, master of the trumpet Roy Hargrove. Hargrove will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. with his quintet. Jamal and Cole will close out the festival on Sunday. Jamal takes the stage at 9 p.m. while Cole hits the bandstand with his quartet at 5 p.m. on the Main Stage.
