The names were read one by one as candles burned to honor those members who died in the past year. The room was silent as the candle flames flickered while family members stood up to be recognized.
This was the scene at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Overtown last Sunday at the annual candlelight service in the sanctuary where about 100 worshippers gathered to celebrate the lives of deceased members. The event was part of the church’s Sunday worship service.
About 12 members of Mt. Zion died between April 2013 and April 2014, according to Linda Rogers, Chairperson of the Board at Mt. Zion.
According to Rogers, The event was started in 1965 and occurs every Memorial Day Weekend, Rogers said.
“It’s a nice tribute to people who have moved on,” she said. “It helps brings closure for those who lost a loved one this year. The lighting of the candle and the extinguishing of the flames (of the candles) lets one know it’s over.”
The members who were remembered are Olive Astwood, Miriam Clark, Delores Davis, Shedrick Davis, Deaconess Thelma Davis, Trustee Harold Dillard, Dorothy Gray, Ivory Hanford, Dorothy Lowrie, Ernest Sidney, Alan Solomon and Terrell Solomon.
