North Miami Hires new police chief

Marc Elias Jr. , who had been tapped to be the acting police chief for the City of North Miami will now assume the position permanently. He said that he hopes to build strong relationships with the youth through the Police Athletic League.

“This is a way for us to reach out to the youth in our community and encourage them with school. Being Haitian and seeing what’s happening around the world, our kids are our future,” he said. “I want them to learn from their ups and downs and to they know they’re not alone.”

The former acting chief of the city took his post in September after former police chief Stephen Johnson went on to become North Miami’s interim city manager. As chief, Elias will oversee the police department. Elias gained recognition as Florida City’s police chief in 1999, becoming the first Haitian-American police chief in Miami-Dade history.
