- Faith & Family
Thursday is Thanksgiving Day and millions of people in Miami-Dade County will celebrate the holiday with family and friends. But while most of us will be celebrating, others will be working a normal day. Thousands of City, County and State workers will rise early and report for work. Law enforcement officers will be patrolling our streets making sure we are safe as they do every
day. Emergency dispatchers will be on the job waiting to assist us with any crisis that may arise. Miami-Dade Transit bus and train operators will be transporting passengers to their destination as they do 365 days a year. Department of Corrections employees will also be on duty making sure family members get to visit with their loved ones. Miami International Airport staff have been preparing all year to deal with the increase in traffic and passengers that will be passing through. Finally, Jackson Health Care Hospital employees will be ready for any trauma that may come their way over the Thanksgiving Holiday. These are just some of the public employees that put our needs before their own on holidays and every day of the year.
Lately, public employees having been getting a bad rap from politicians, governors and the private sector. Their work often goes unnoticed and many feel unappreciated and under valued. Many routinely put their lives on the line for the residents in this community. Sadly last week, Miami-Dade Transit train operator George Andrews lost his life while on the job. Imagine what would happen if you had to live with the smell of garbage in front of your home because Solid Waste employees decided to stay home and celebrate the long weekend with their families and friends? As the saying goes, “you don’t miss your water until your well runs dry.”
While it’s true that some of us depend on public services more than others, they are important to us all. As we give thanks this holiday remember to acknowledge the many employees that will remain on the job. There is no doubt in my mind they will be there to provide us with the best quality service on Thanksgiving and every other day. Happy Thanksgiving!
